Baby
swings top the list of product recalls. Twenty three
baby swings
have been recalled since 1982. An announcement was made on July 13, 2004
by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalling all Graco Travel Lite
portable
baby swings:
“The swing’s carrying
handle can fail to stay in place properly and drop or be pushed down,
hitting a child in the head. Additionally, the three-point seatbelt can fail
to prevent a child from leaning forward or to either side, posing a risk
that the child can fall forward and strike his/her head on the floor or the
swing’s frame.”
Obviously this emphasizes the
importance in choosing baby swings that safe above all other concerns.
With this many recalls on baby swings it is important to assess baby swings
for yourself beyond the manufacturers standards for acceptability.
Consider all possible dangers for your newborn before purchasing any baby
swings.
When choosing baby swings safety is priority #1
Here are some other
considerations to assess when purchasing baby swings:
 |
Check any headrest for
proper head support |
 |
Be sure the swing does not
sit too low or too high |
 |
Be sure the baby swing has
a five-point harness |
 |
Be sure your baby cannot
lean over the sides of the baby swing. |
 |
Be sure the swing does not
swing too fast or too slow. |
And above all use your own
common sense when choosing baby swings. Babies have a way of doing what
you never expect them to do. Imagine the worst case scenario and
determine for yourself if your infant will be safe should this occur.
Pointing out the doom and gloom
of baby swings is not fun for you and doesn't help sell baby swings, but your
baby's safety is 1st-in-baby-stores highest priority. If this warning
helps one baby avoid serious injury or death, then it is worth it.
